Swinging Balls Pendulum

Often describes the popular Newton’s Cradle, or the Pendulum wave (or harmonic pendulum).

What is a swinging‑balls pendulum?

People call it the Swinging Ball Pendulum because it is a simple pendulum whose most visually defining feature is a ball-shaped mass that swings back and forth, making the name an intuitive description rather than a formal scientific term.

 There are two main types:
  • A swinging‑balls pendulum with v-shaped strings with a row of identical sphere shaped masses touching each other.  The spheres consist of solid metal (usually steel) each of equal‑size balls suspended by strings so they can swing freely. When one ball is dropped and released from an elevated position, it transfers momentum and energy through the line of stationary balls, causing another ball to swing out at the other end while the rest remain nearly still.
Swinging Ball Pendulum
  • A device made of a series of individual pendulums balls, often metal or plastic balls, golf balls, or bowling balls each hanging on an independent line. The pendulum wave creates mesmerising patterns is because a shorter string has a shorter period and swings faster.
Harmonic Wave Swinging Ball Pendulum Cradle

When you release all the balls simultaneously, you are watching these counting differences play out in real time.

If you are watching an Active Magnetic Cradle the visual rhythm feels deeply familiar to a pendulum wave or newtons cradle because one relies on phase-shifting cycles and the other on instant collisions. However, the core physics governing their “timing” are completely different paths.

  • Newton’s Cradle is instant timing (rigid impact).
  • Pendulum Wave is independent timing (illusion of teamwork, strictly governed by geometry).
  • Active Magnetic Cradle is cushioned timing (true teamwork, governed by invisible magnetic push-and-pull).

other pendulum names

People often use specific names when the pendulum’s purpose or behaviour is unusual:
  • Foucault pendulum — Demonstrates Earth’s rotation.
  • Double pendulum — Two linked arms producing chaotic motion.
  • Torsion pendulum — Twists rather than swings.
In contrast, the “Swinging Ball Pendulum” is simply the everyday label for the most basic form.
